    Job Title:                     Shelter Manager

    Job Status:                  Full time, Salaried, Exempt

    Job Relationship:       Reports to Executive Director; Manages shelter operations, staff, and volunteers.

    Position Summary:    The Shelter Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the shelter.  The Shelter Manager will manage shelter staff and volunteers, maintain facilities and equipment, manage cash transactions and interface with the office manager, interact with the public, and ensure that shelter animals receive proper care.  Additionally, the Shelter Manager will facilitate adoptions, oversee offsite programs, and promote the shelter and programs.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Responsible for supervising shelter staff and volunteers:
      • Trains employees on policies and procedures; provides guidance to staff in meeting goals and works closely with the Executive Director in hiring, resolving personnel issues, and conducting performance evaluations      
      • Prepares work schedules for staff and volunteers to ensures adequate staffing levels to achieve a high standard of animal care daily; performs shelter operational cleaning and animal care duties as needed
    • Ensures that policies and procedures are being followed; oversees that standards for animal care are maintained and that the shelter environment is kept safe, clean, and organized each day.
    • Performs in house adoptions, animal intakes, and medical treatments in adherence with policies including working with local veterinarians and coordinating transportation of animals.
    • Provides prompt and professional customer service to clients over the phone, via email and in person
    • Counsels and educates clients on proper animal care
    •  Oversees the offsite adoptions program:
      • Selects and coordinates transport of animals to/from offsite locations and special events as needed to ensure optimal use of offsite space to market animals
      • Acts as a liaison between the shelter and offsite and transfer partners;
      • Maintains accurate records and files for offsite program
    • Handles money and daily receipts for the shelter in accordance with policies
    • Maintains shelter management software and statistics, and prepares reports and other documentation as requested
    • Receives and tracks shelter inventory, maintains necessary supplies, places orders and solicits donations as needed
    • Leads shelter staff meetings and participates in other meetings, special events, and fundraisers as requested; maintains flexibility in order to be available for meetings and events occurring after-hours and weekends
    • Other duties as assigned
    • High school diploma or equivalent. Higher education strongly preferred.
    • Minimum of 2 years’ professional experience in customer service and staff supervision; demonstrated excellent client services and project management skills
    • Previous experience working in animal welfare, veterinary, or shelter environment and knowledge of animal health and behavior strongly preferred
    • Good animal handling skills; able to work safely with animals, disinfectants, and cleaning supplies in both indoor and outdoor environments are essential to this position
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills are necessary
    • Good crisis management skills and the ability to make sound decisions when working independently
    • Excellent attention to detail
    • Good data entry and computer skills; able to accurately maintain and collect statistical data from shelter software systems and usage of standard office software
    • Commitment to the mission and objectives of the organization
    • Valid Colorado driver’s license and good driving record
    Physical Requirements and Working Conditions: Must be able to work quickly and efficiently, with a high degree of organization. Variety of sitting and active periods. Must be able to lift and carry at least 45 pounds without assistance, up to 75 pounds with reasonable accommodations.  Must be able to safely and humanely control cats and leashed dogs up to 200 pounds. Ability to withstand outside weather variations.  Exposure to potential hazards include disinfectants, high levels of noise, slippery work surfaces, animal bites/scratches and zoonotic diseases, animal dander and waste, and entering/leaving work areas unaccompanied. A recent tetanus shot is required.
